SCALLIONS

SCALLION A scallion is actually a young onion pulled before the bulb has formed. It is also a name popularly used for young "bunch" or green onions which are sown thickly and harvested when of edible size.

Planting and culture of Scallions

Scallions can be grown from sets or from seed. A simple way to grow green onions from sets, and the method employed by many home gardeners, is to plant bulb sets early in the spring and to pull the green onions when they attain desired size.

Time your planting

Sets should be placed three to four inches apart in rows 12 to 18 inches apart. Sets may also be planted in the fall early enough to become established before the ground freezes. Scallions are perennial and can be overwintered with some protection such as a loose mulch of leaves or straw.

Planting Scallions

Scallion seed may be planted in early spring or, if given winter protection, in late fall. Fresh seed should be planted thickly, in rows 12 to 18 inches apart, and covered with 1/2 inch of sifted compost. One packet of seed will sow a 25-foot row.

Feeding and watering Scallions

Scallions prefer a moderately acid soil (pH 6 to 6.5) that is rich in available plant food. They will tolerate a slight amount of shade, but prefer open, moist, sunny conditions. During dry weather, sufficient water should be provided to supply the natural requirements of the plants. This is best done by a thorough, slow flooding of the area during the cool of the evening.

Harvesting Scallions

Green bunch onions are harvested as soon as they are eight to ten inches tall and 1/2 inch thick. Sixty days is the usual maturation period for scallions. Several pullings are usually made. Remove the largest plants each time, leaving the others to develop. Before eating or cooking, the roots are trimmed and the outer skin is peeled off, leaving the stem clean and white.

Varieties of Scallions

Southport White Globe is widely used for the production of green bunch onions from seed. It requires less peeling than most varieties. Hardy White Bunching, Yellow Globe Danvers, Long White Bunching, and Evergreen White Bunching are also popular varieties.
