Third Quarter Moon: Moon Phase Gardening - Roots crops gain strength during the third quarter moon.
The Third Quarter Moon: A Time for Planting Below Ground Crops
When the moon enters the third quarter its light is beginning to diminish (i.e. waning moon), the light energy is failing while gravitational effects are drawing moisture down through the soil.
During this time of decreasing moonlight root crops establish themselves. The above ground portion of the plant rests as growth continues beneath the soil.
Plant biennials, perennials, bulbs, root plants and trees and shrubs now for the best results.
See: Below ground crops - The effect of the moon on root vegetables
Root Crops and MulchThis moon phase favors below ground crops and those with well-developed root systems such as trees. Also, mulch in the third quarter and finish off garden projects and tasks.See: Mulch - Providing a natural covering for your garden soil
This period of moon phases is further refined into two distinct categories.Full Moon through the Third Quarter Moon
Time to Plant Root CropsThis is the best time for planting root crops such as beets, carrots, onions, potatoes, and peanuts. It is also considered a good time for planting any vegetation which is planted in one season to winter over and produce yields the following year. Trees, shrubs, perennials, biennials and bulbs do best now because of the active root growth during this phase of the moon.Canning and preservationCanning of fruit and vegetables should be done after the full Moon and before the Third Quarter Moon. This is thought to insure proper preservation of your harvested crop.See: Harvesting and Preservation - Harvest and preserve your bounty

Third Quarter Moon through the New Moon
Time for Garden Maintenance Cultivate the soil, weed the garden, employ pest management and remove unwanted plants. Pruning is also best done in this phase of the moon and is reserved for garden clean up. There's a gardening rumor that if you pull weeds during the fourth quarter, they won't grow back! Now is the time to cultivate, pull weeds, destroy pests, and turn sod. During this quarter there is no planting. It is the time of destruction. This is when the farmer cut his fence posts and firewood. He plowed the fields and pulled weeds. Cut timber during the last quarter; it will dry better.
